Paraoptometric Isn't Just an Option—It's OPT-N

Vision West has paired with the American Optometric, Association’s Paraoptometric Section (AOA PS) to promote the new Online Paraoptometric Training-Navigation (OPT-N) program with their members. OPT-N was designed to assist new, uncertified staff in developing a foundation of understanding about the field of optometry. AOA Paraoptometric Section kicks off promotion of the OPT-N pilot program with Vision West representatives to promote the new Online Paraoptometric Training-Navigator (OPT-N) program.

Currently, OPT-N is an AOA PS member-protected, online program with links to individual easy-to-use, automated, audio PowerPoint presentations that walk the user through each step of the learning process. A new staff member may learn important terminology, Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPPA) requirements, and even basic pre-testing procedures from the comfort of their own home before beginning the hands-on portion of their training. As a way to gauge retention, there are also small quizzes throughout each presentation and a final set of questions as review.

Seeking to provide information to its members about unique training tools, Vision West approached the AOA PS to develop a partnership in the promotion of the OPT-N program. Vision West members may have an opportunity to earn i-Rewards points toward free AOA PS membership and access to the OPT-N program. This partnership will run for one year, allowing Vision West members to learn more about OPT-N and the opportunity for a new, easier way to train staff. At higher levels of the i-Rewards program, Vision West members may also earn free certification examination study resources and training tools. OPT-N is available FREE to AOA PS members through Dec. 31, 2009, thanks to the sponsorship of Essilor and The Vision Care Institute™, LLC. OPT-N is currently designed for new staff; thus there is no continuing education (CE) available. In later phases of the program, designed for more advanced paraoptometrics, CE opportunities will be offered.
